“It’s my honour to inform you that King won the National Award, Steve”
At 11:20 a.m. this last Saturday October 3rd, these were all the words necessary for Steve Pellegrini, Chair of the King Blooms Committee, to tell the world what had just been announced at the Communities in Bloom national conference in Vaughan, Ontario, “Sent from a screen that is 2″x3″, or in other words, my blackberry.”
Pellegrini, former 2-term King Township Councillor and previous Mayoralty candidate, was estatic with the outcome, as were the members of the King Blooms Committee including Lynda Rogers, Blair Day, Barb Niemeyer, Carol Ann Trabert and Janet Orr.
Below is an excerpt of the official Communities in Bloom award description:
2009 National Edition
Township of King, ON
Winner of the 10,001 to 20,000 Population Category
Special Mention: Conservation of Farmland and Old Growth Forests
The Township of King has won in the 10,001 to 20,000 population category of the 2009 National Edition of Communities in Bloom, receiving a 5 Bloom rating and a special mention for the Conservation of Farmland and Old Growth Forests.
Between Toronto and Barrie, The Township of King has been described as the ‘Lungs of Toronto’: nearly 70 percent of the land is on the Oak Ridges Moraine, a protected area, while the rest is protected by Greenbelt. Agriculture is the way of life for many in the township, and the Moraine has a unique concentration of environmental, geological and hydrological features that make its ecosystem vital to south-central Ontario.
Communities in Bloom is a national organization dedicated to the promotion of green spaces in urban settings.
Within the actual context of climate changes and environmental concerns, communities involved in the Communities in Bloom program can be proud of their efforts, which provide real and meaningful environmental solutions and benefit all of society.
